Off the Wall Air Cons
February 26th, 2009 by admin
I’ve been doing a lot of research on the best available portable air conditioners lately, and I’ve stumbled upon a few less conventional units that have a certain novelty value. I remember in school that some people used to wear those caps with mini battery powered fans on them to school sport days, but they seemed to have died out with the last century, as I haven’t seen them around in my adulthood. Aside from their novelty value, I always thought they were pretty nifty, because while the rest of us were busy fanning ourselves with grubby sport’s day programmes, the lucky kids with the fan-hats were looking slightly less red-faced.
In Japan, they have something similar but for the office. A little air conditioner is hidden in the neck of a tie, and you can plug it into your computer via a USB device. These are especially useful for formal offices where men are forced to wear neckties, which I imagine can get quite hot in summer.
On a more serious note, Samsung has just launched its BioSleeplus Air conditioner that works with your body’s rhythm to keep an optimal temperature in the room, so that you will never wake up feeling either hot and bothered, or freezing cold. It also works on adjusting humidity, so that the room is never stuffy, but your skin doesn’t get dry either. The device works very quietly, so as not to interrupt your sleep and adjusts itself automatically, so that it uses the minimum amount of energy possible and switches off when the temperature is just right.
My last ‘off the wall’ air conditioner does not strictly speaking cool the air but it does condition the air with aromas. The USB mini aromatic diffuser is also powered by a USB device, so you can keep it on your desk. It draws in air and cleanses pollutants from it, and then releases the clean air with a touch of pleasant aroma. This is great if you sit near colleagues who permanently have an aura of nicotine around them, as the diffuser will take away the smell of stale cigarette smoke. It is also very useful if you work near a factory that releases a lot of pollutants. You apply essential oils to the unit so you can alternate what fragrance your air contains each day.
Aside from the air conditioner necktie (but only because I don’t wear ties), I wouldn’t say no to any of these original air conditioning and fan devices; I think they’re actually quite practical. What I really want to discover, though, is a shop that still sells the cap-fans that I longed for in my childhood — even if they don’t look that slick on an adult.
