Due to their popularity and long history of coexistence with human beings, one of the best and most closely studied areas in veterinary medicine is the health of the domestic dog. There exists a prevalence of infectious diseases in dogs while also put a risk to public health (such as rabies), thus dog health is considered very important from a veterinary standpoint. Also common in dogs are genetic diseases due to the selective method of breeding necessary to produce individual dog breeds. Dogs often suffer from diseases also found in human beings—such as diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, or arthritis. Nutrition is also a hot topic because of commercial dog foods and a rising interest in homemade dog food. Many foods that humans enjoy can be dangerous or even fatal to dogs. Therefore, veterinarians recommended against feeding a dog table scraps so as not to upset their diet.
