If you enjoy learning about evolution, geology and fossils, the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is a must-see destination in Oregon. You can enjoy your favorite outdoors activities at this National Monument, but you’ll also want to spend time learning about the incredible fossils here to enhance your experience. The Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at the Sheep Rock unit section of the Park is the best place to begin your exploration. There is an 18 minute orientation film available upon request at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center, and it provides an excellent overview of the Fossil Beds and the Museum. Following the film, you can tour the Museum’s intriguing exhibits and other audiovisual presentations. Special interpretive programs are also available seasonally. Fossils are the most exciting aspect of the exhibits at The Thomas Condon Paleontology Center. You’ll see some of the more than 40,000 fossils held at the Center in a variety of intriguing displays. More than 40 million years of plant and animal evolution are detailed within this expansive fossil record.
